Children of a Lesser Oscar

Is there any Best Actress winner of the last 30 years that receives less buzz that Marlee Matlin? No one cheering on the performance, no one complaining about the win, nothing about Children of a Lesser God even. Even though the movie on occasion tends to land with a lack of bite it’s really quite enjoyable and Marlee Matlin and William Hurt are great opposite each other. And Piper Laurie is as good as usual in a short role that for some reason netted her an Oscar nod. It’s Marlee’s film all the way, so there’s really no better way to remember her on birthday.

And she was only 21 when she did it.

Loooove this movie, one with which I have a very intimate relationship with. We did the show in high school, with me as James Leeds. I had to learn ASL and everything, and during production I became close with the girl I eventually dated for five years (though she played the Piper Laurie best friend, on the other hand, totally hooked up with Sarah Norman-Leeds). Same gf was inspired by the show (she never saw the movie) and is now in grad school so's she can teach ASL.

As for me, it's a movie I like to visit every now and then. Marlee Matlin is so beautiful it puts a lump in my throat. Loved her championing of Gabourey Sidibe years later, saying, "People said I was limited for casting opps...still working 20 years later!!!"

Not sure I agree.
I think that from the past 30 years even fewer talk about Jodie Foster's win for The Accused.

and almost the same about Jessica Lange's Blue Sky.

Marlee got a lot of press for the last season of Celebrity Apprentice. It might not count as Oscar talk, but I can assure you than her being an Oscar winner was thrown in every other episode.

I've never seen a performance by Matlin where she wasn't the brightest thing in the room and we're talking from "Seinfeld" to "The West Wing"...and "Celebrity Apprentice."

walter i love that tidbit. things like that always make you love the things they remind you of that much more.

candice hurt was on fire back then.

alex i think jodie gets more talk even as aside because people talk about how glenn was robbed. i hear you on jessica in blue sky, though.

yojimbo she is impossibly charming. even on the god-awful dancing with the stars she was lovely.
