On His Birthday...

I have a vague antipathy towards Clint Eastwood on principle. On two separate occasions he beat out two of my favourite films for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and as silly as it is, I’ve never gotten over it. The fact that I’m hardly a fan of his work generally is just insult being added to injury. I do love him for Mystic River, though. It does appear on my list of favourite films, and with good reason. I think it’s almost perfect. I’ll forget the injustices done to James Ivory and Martin Scorsese (and the inadvertent ones done to Annette Bening and Clive Owen) and instead revel in the goodness of Clint.

In reference to Marty & Annette & Clive losing their respective Oscars to a certain movie, I will simply say "Looooooooosers!"

Okay, I'm sorry. That was harsh. But I'm not taking it back.

I'm not a huge Clint fan either - in fact I don't really love Mystic River (besides Marcia and Laura, both of whom are beyond brilliant).

nicholas i love how we can agree on important things like titanic and woody but we agree on the little things like clint. and yes, i said "little".

robert for some reason laura rubs me the wrong way in mystic river. she's my least favourite of the bunch, and i usually love her - even when her characters are dubious (have you seen her in the big c?

At last...someone who does not worship at the Eastwood altar! Oscars or no, I found "Unforgiven" appalling on many levels. Still scratching my head over its success.
