Oscar Birthday

You know what’s better than winning one Oscar? You guessed it – winning two. And better than winning two there’s a thrill in winning them backing to back. A couple of performers have done so – Katharine Hepburn, Tom Hanks, Spencer Tracy and today is the birthday of the woman he did it first. Happy birthday to Luise Rainer, I may not have caught up on anywhere near enough of your performances but you are Oscar royalty nonetheless.
Which performance of hers do you consider essential viewing?

Well, her Oscar-winning performances need to be seen because she was great in both of them! She was also wonderful in The Great Waltz and Big City.

The Good Earth, definitely, as she made the most of a bad situation. But, then, both her back-to-back Oscar wins I'd consider essential. Plus, there's a perverse streak in me that wants to see her performance on The Love Boat. mIsn't Luise 101 today?

"The Great Ziegfeld", for one of the first "telephone" scenes that grabbed Oscar's attention. (Fannie Brice also appears in this film, making it a treasure of sorts!)

I'd second both Oscar wins (I think seeing them both really brings home just how good she was - it's almost a different person!). I'd also recommend 1997's 'comeback' film The Gambler,if only because she steals the whole film in 15 minutes.
