Decade in Review: Clothes Horses

I won’t admit to being particularly knowledgeable on the subject of clothes. I mean, all I can really comment on is pretty or not…but then I still like to think I can recognise good costume designing in film. Yeah, I’m a little overachiever. We know Oscar has their love affair with royalty – and they’re good, excellent even. Incidentally, no royalty porn makes my list here. It’s a rundown of ten films where the innovativeness of the costume designing piqued my interest. Here they are, chronologically.

A number of these outfits are part of their characters. Which films had costumes that leapt out at you? Can you recognise all ten I've listed?

It's the weirdest thing, but I an so oblivious to costumes, which is a bad thing really. Someone more observant could say to me "Wow, those costumes were amazing!" and I'd be absolutely clueless.

is the first one 'The Other Boleyn Girl' and theres a 'Shakespeare in Love' must be another. Costumes by Sandy Powell are generally incredible - whether she is working period costumes like 'Gangs of New York' or 'Shakespeare in Love', or something like Shutter Island, she is bloody good at here job.

I'll give it a try, although only the first two really popped out at me!

1. Arwen in Lord of the Rings (Fellowship?)
2. Satine in Moulin Rouge
3. ???
no idea! but for some reason reminds me of Inara in Serenity (although I know it's not)
4. Nicole Kidman in Cold Mountain
5. ???
6. Keira Knightley in Atonement
7. Helena Bonham Carter in Sweeney Todd
8. ???
don't think I've seen this one...
9. Nicole Kidman in Nine
10. ???
don't think I've seen it either

You've really dug Nicole Kidman's threads this decade, haven't you?! ;o)

#5 is the wonderful Cate Blanchett as Kate Hepburn.
I love that you put her on top of Keira, given how their slouchiness makes their masculine clothes so damn sexy.

duh! of course it's Cate! damn! Definitely have to rewatch that one! :p

kid in the front i think i'm that way with visuals. unless it's all in your face [avatar] i tend to miss it.

simoncolumb sandy is excellent, even though gangs is the only one above.

anahita hee. i know you liked marie antoinette. the costumes were pretty, but i didn't really find them as original (like elizabeth, the goldne age) as those above.

peter correct on all your guesses. jose answers #5. it is sandy's work on the aviator. i thought that'd be a giveaway, since cate's hair is in the shot.

crazycris #3 - it's jenny from gangs of new york. sandy powell, again. peter guessed bright star as #8 above. yeah, i just noticed my incessant nicole love. oh well.

jose i know, right.i was tempted to put the green dress for k, but the detail on that (whatever you call it) is really good.

EVERYONE #10 is the excellent work by consolata boyle on cheri, the model is la pfeiffer.

The dresses in The Other Boleyn Girl were gorgeous.

And Star Wars prequel. Padme Amidala...her wardrobe was out of this world and a lot of them were just beautiful.
